Saravana Bhavan Mini Idli

The main thing you have to noted that the sambar or the idlies should be hot for perfect absorbing. Just do this mixing 5 mins before you serve. This sambar is simple just adding sambar powder but one important notes the sambar be made more with tomatoes and less in tamarind. Ghee is perfect for tempering this sambar and topping too.

To prepare Saravana Bhavan Mini Idli
  • Toor dal – 1/2 cup
  • Turmaric powder 1/4 tspn
  • Asafoetida – 1/4 spn
  • Red chilli – 2 nos
  • Shallots / Small onions – 15 nos
  • Tamarind extract – 2 tbspn
  • Tomato – 2 (chopped)
  • Sambar powder – 2 tbspn
  • Fresh grated coconut – 4 tspn
  • Coriander leaves – (chopped)as needed
  • Coconut oil – 3 tspn
  • Mustard – 1tspn
  • Cumin seeds – 1/2 tspn
  • Urad dal – 1/2 tspn
  • Red chilli – 2 nos (broken)
  • Curry leaves – as needed
Mini idli – as needed
Ghee – as needed
  1. Prepare your mini idli and keep aside..
  2. In a pressure cooker add dal, turmaric, chilli, asafoetida, and some water, Close the lid and whistled it for 4..
  3. When it cooked mash the dal well once done. keep aside.
  4. Heat a kadai, add peeled small onions, tomatoes, fry it well
  5. Add tamarind juice, sambar powder and required salt bring to boil..
  6. At this stage add cooked dal to that and mix well
  7. Now boiled it for 5 mins. Then add coconut, chopped coriander leaves.. Give it a mix..
  8. Heat a kadai, temper the items given under ‘ to temper ‘ table in order and fry for a minute and pour in the sambar
  9. Now off the stove you may also top with some ghee (optional). The sambar is ready for making sambar idly.
  10. Then arrange mini idlli in a plate and pour the sambar over it..
  11. Topped it with some ghee (optional) to make the recipe perfect.
  12. The Saravana Bhavan Mini Idli is ready to serve.
